The familiar parts of summer are still here. Jazz on the Plazz fills Town Plaza Park on Wednesdays. Music in the Park returns to the Civic Center lawn on Sundays. Restaurants, shops, and independent venues continue their own programming along North Santa Cruz Avenue and the surrounding blocks.
What changed in 2026 is how those pieces connect.
Los Gatos adopted a new Downtown Entertainment Zone framework in February. Its first activation came during GOLD Thursday on May 7. For a limited window, approved downtown businesses could sell drinks to go to adults wearing official wristbands, with those beverages permitted inside a marked public area.
That narrow change matters because it encourages people to circulate rather than choose one restaurant, one patio, or one performance for the entire evening. The summer calendar is familiar. The mechanics of the block are new.
The New Rule Is Narrower Than It May Sound
The Town Council adopted Ordinance 2382 on February 17, 2026. The ordinance established the legal framework for an Entertainment Zone within downtown, but it did not turn the district into a permanent open-container area.
Each activation still requires an approved special-event permit. Participating establishments must be permanently located within the designated area, hold the appropriate license, and complete the required ABC process.
For residents, the practical rules are straightforward:
- The confirmed activation occurs during GOLD Thursdays.
- Adults must be 21 or older.
- An official wristband is issued at the point of sale.
- The beverage must come from a participating business.
- Outdoor consumption is limited to the marked Entertainment Zone.
- The GOLD Thursday window runs from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
- North Santa Cruz Avenue remains open to vehicle traffic.
Do not assume the same rules apply during Jazz on the Plazz, Music in the Park, or an ordinary evening downtown. The zone operates only when it has been formally activated for a permitted event.

What The First GOLD Thursday Demonstrated
The May 7 launch provides a useful baseline for understanding the program.
According to the Chamber’s May 2026 report to the Town, the first Entertainment Zone activation included:
- 11 participating restaurants
- Nine other businesses with promotions or activities
- Live music at seven downtown locations
- A reported sales total of approximately $16,000 for one retailer during the event
Those figures show the real purpose of the program. GOLD Thursday is designed to move foot traffic among multiple businesses. It gives a resident a reason to hear music at one location, stop at a shop on the next block, and finish the evening somewhere else.
The timing is deliberate. The Chamber describes GOLD Thursdays as an economic-vitality effort intended in part to offset softer weekend activity connected to seasonal beach cut-through traffic. Local reporting in June also documented closures and changing consumer habits affecting downtown merchants.
The measured takeaway is that summer programming is creating new opportunities for downtown businesses. It does not mean every storefront is having the same experience.
There are positive changes within that mixed picture. Fiat Lux opened on North Santa Cruz Avenue in 2026. Owner Marcelo Tau cited the appeal of a downtown where people can spend time across shops and other local businesses instead of making a single-purpose mall visit. That is closely aligned with what GOLD Thursdays are trying to encourage.
The Remaining Summer Calendar Has A Clear Rhythm
As of July 15, the next several weeks alternate between Town Plaza Park, the Civic Center lawn, and the wider downtown district. The schedule is easier to use when viewed as a sequence rather than a long event list.
Wednesdays: Jazz On The Plazz
Jazz on the Plazz is organized by Los Gatos Music and Arts and normally runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Town Plaza Park on Montebello Way. The 2026 series continues through August 26.

First Thursdays: GOLD Thursday
GOLD Thursdays run from May through October. Business promotions may take place throughout the day, with downtown music and entertainment generally scheduled from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Entertainment Zone continues until 9:00 p.m. during an approved activation.

No general event ticket is required. Promotions and participating locations can change, so the Chamber’s digital map is more useful than a static list. The free Los Gatos Perks Pass can also be saved to a phone without downloading an app.
Sundays: Music In The Park
The Town’s free Music in the Park series has been part of Los Gatos summers since 1988. Concerts run from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the Civic Center lawn.
The 2026 schedule is:

- July 26: Estero
- August 2: The BentPeter Band
- August 9: Lindsay and the Cheeks
- August 16: Miko Marks
- August 23: Harry and the Hitmen
The first full week of August captures this year’s new rhythm particularly well. Full Spectrum Big Band plays Town Plaza on Wednesday, August 5. GOLD Thursday follows on August 6. Lindsay and the Cheeks perform on the Civic Center lawn on Sunday, August 9.
Those are separate events with separate rules, but together they create several reasons to return downtown within five days.
A Better Way To Plan The Evening
The most useful approach is to choose one anchor event, then build a short route around it. Trying to solve dinner, entertainment, parking, and changing event rules after arrival usually adds unnecessary friction.
Before leaving home
- Confirm the event time. July 29 Jazz on the Plazz begins at 6:00 p.m., earlier than the other listed jazz dates.
- Check the live organizer page. Performers, offers, and operating details can change.
- Review the GOLD Thursday map if applicable. The map identifies current participants and the marked Entertainment Zone.
- Confirm admission details. The civic concert series and GOLD Thursday do not require general admission tickets, but independently programmed venues may have their own policies.
- Review current parking restrictions. Posted signs control, even when an online map suggests a nearby public lot.
After choosing the anchor event
Consider adding one short activity rather than filling every minute. The Chamber launched an Outdoor Art of Los Gatos itinerary in May 2026, highlighting murals, sculpture, and other public art. It can provide a quieter walk before a concert or dinner.
Independent nightlife also continues after the civic programming. Number 1 Broadway’s July calendar includes recurring country nights and performers such as Bent Peter Band, The Groove Foundation, and Dustflower. Check the venue’s current calendar for admission and timing rather than relying on an older event listing.
Parking Works Better With A Two-Block Plan
Circling directly around North Santa Cruz Avenue at performance time is rarely the calmest option. The Town identifies several public parking locations without time limits within one or two blocks of downtown for Music in the Park and other busy evenings.
Options listed by the Town include:
- South Side Lot on South Santa Cruz Avenue
- Park Avenue Lot at West Main Street
- Underground Lot 4 on Railroad Way between Elm and Gray’s
- Miles Avenue Lot
- Montebello Lot near the Post Office
- The lot behind Los Gatos High School
- Civic Center parking
- North Side Lot north of Highway 9 between University and North Santa Cruz
The Town’s event parking page is a useful starting point. Los Gatos also offers free hourly on-street spaces and public lots with varying rules. Read the posted limits before walking away from the car.
One detail deserves repeating: North Santa Cruz Avenue remains open to cars during GOLD Thursday. This is a strolling event within an active downtown street network, not a pedestrian-only closure.
Why Downtown Feels Different
Los Gatos did not replace its established summer traditions. It added a controlled layer that connects them more intentionally to the surrounding business district.
Jazz on the Plazz still has its own Wednesday cadence. Music in the Park still brings people to the Civic Center lawn on Sundays. GOLD Thursday now adds a first-Thursday structure that encourages residents to move among restaurants, retailers, and live entertainment.
That is the meaningful 2026 change. The town is testing whether a carefully managed event zone can help people spend more of an evening across the district while preserving clear boundaries around where and when outdoor beverages are allowed.
The program is still specific to permitted activations, and its business mix will continue to change. For now, the best way to experience it is simple: verify the rules, choose an anchor event, park a couple of blocks out, and leave room to discover one place you did not plan to visit.
Looking further ahead, Taste of Los Gatos is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, from noon to 5:00 p.m. The Los Gatos Art & Wine Festival follows on September 26 and 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Both are daytime events that carry the downtown calendar toward fall.
