Walk south from the Caltrain garage on a Wednesday in July, and the first thing you notice is that the block reads as one room now. String lights overhead, chairs pulled from three different restaurants into a shared middle, a cover band a half block away pulling sound down the sidewalk. Sunnyvale converted Murphy Avenue into a pedestrian mall in 2023, and after two years of construction dust and a rotating cast of tenants, the summer of 2026 is the first one where the redesign, the restaurant lineup, and the programming calendar all line up. If you already live within a bike ride of downtown, that changes how you plan a Tuesday, not just how you plan a Saturday.
This is a note on what's actually different this summer, and where to point out-of-town guests when they ask what to do after dinner.
The Block Finally Reads As One Room
The physical work is done.
